You can’t miss the Lift. It’s in the north end of Shoreditch Park. Rounds of BigBallBingo will run roughly every 30 minutes between 1.00pm and 4.30pm. The Grand Final happens at 5.00pm and the Big Medal Ceremony will follow soon afterwards.
Running inbetween times will be an Audio Tour of Shoreditch Futures on big wireless headphones. And you can get drinks from the bar and enjoy the rest of the Hackney Handover Day closing the Shoreditch Festival. Why not bring a picnic?
How to play BigBallBingo
There are three teams competing for the Big Medals: Red, Yellow and Blue. You can sign up for a team by clicking one of the colours here or just rocking up to play on the day any time from 1.00pm.
Three in One
BigBallBingo is actually three games in one round: BigBall, Bingo and ReallyBigBall. The team that wins the most games in one round wins that round. The team that wins the most rounds in the afternoon – the Final counting for treble – will win the Big Gold Medal, followed by Big Silver and Big Bronze.
Outside or Inside
You play for your team either outside – BigBall and ReallyBigBall, refereed by Arthur Wint – or inside the Lift – Bingo, called by Dot Tyler.
BigBall
In BigBall, each team has 30 Big Balls to score in their goal as quickly as possible. But you can’t run with a ball, only pass or shoot. The game ends when House! is called in Bingo and the team with the most goals wins BigBall. It’s up to you and your team to work out how to do that.
Bingo
The Big Balls are numbered. As they are scored, the numbers are called back into the Bingo. The first player to call House! wins Bingo for their team (and may win a little something extra for themselves too!)
ReallyBigBall
When House! is called, the ReallyBigBall is released outside. It’s a bit like volleyball with a Really Big Ball and your team scores ‘outs’ if you drop the ball in your zone, knock it out the pitch, or volley it more than 5 times before passing it to another team. After 3 minutes’ play, the team with the fewest ‘outs’ wins ReallyBigBall.
